Clear blue water and a freediving line off the coast of Gozo in summer

Seasons & conditions

Best time to go freediving in Malta

Warm water from May to October, quiet and clear through the winter, and a sweet spot in late June and October. Here is how the seasons actually change your diving.

The short answer

When is the best time to go freediving in Malta?

Malta and Gozo are divable in every month of the year, but the season that suits most visitors runs from May to October. In that window the sea is warm enough for a thin wetsuit, the weather is settled, and visibility sits between 20 and 35 m on most days.

How the seasons change

Three seasons, three ways to dive

25–27 °C

Summer

Warmest water, busiest island

July – September

Long, flat days on the line and the easiest conditions of the year. It is also peak season, so book course dates and accommodation early and expect company at the most famous sites. The Santa Marija public holiday in mid-August is the busiest week of the year on Gozo.

22–25 °C

Shoulder season

The sweet spot

Late June & October

The best balance of the year: warm water, calm seas, fewer boats and easier ferry crossings. October in particular combines summer warmth with autumn clarity, and the island is quiet again without being shut.

15–18 °C

Winter

Quiet, clear and cold

November – April

The water cools, but some of the clearest days of the year fall in January and February. You need a proper 5 mm suit with hood, boots and gloves and a shorter session plan. Certified divers can join a line session rather than a course.

Before you book flights

Plan around conditions, not just dates

Because Gozo is small we pick the site each morning by wind and swell, so a course day is rarely lost to weather. Send us your dates and we will tell you which days of your trip look calmest — that single message usually matters more than the month itself.

What divers say

“Top guy! Relaxed instructor, zero ego, safe and confidence inspiring. I did the Wave 1 course over the past few days and couldn't be happier. Octopus, eels, pipe fish, caves... And we saw a seahorse. Thanks dude.”

“I had a great time diving with Ivan! I am Molchanovs Wave 1 and came to Malta to expand my depth experience and maybe get some new PBs (and i did!). I dived with Ivan for 3 days in a row - all great session where I improved my dives every day and got familiar with new techniques and theory. Thank you, Ivan - see you next time!”
