Line and safety diver set up on a calm Gozo bay before a freediving session

Safety & conditions

Calm water, close attention

Freediving safety is mostly decided before anyone holds their breath: the site you choose, the ratio you dive at, and the habits you build from the first metre.

Safety & conditions

The four things that decide a session

Weather first

Wind direction decides where we dive far more than wind strength. A strong breeze on one coast usually leaves a sheltered bay calm on the other, which is why we keep several sites open on every course day.

Sea state and visibility

We look at swell, current and visibility before we commit to a site. If the water is not suitable for the day's plan, we move the session to a calmer bay or reschedule rather than push on.

Two students, one instructor

Every in-water session runs at a maximum of two students per instructor. One dives while the other is watched on the surface, and you are never in the water without an instructor's eyes on you.

Safety procedures, every dive

Lanyard, counter-ballast and a deep safety diver are standard on our line sessions. You learn the buddy and rescue procedures from day one, so the habits are there before the depth grows.

On the day

What happens if the sea turns

Gozo is sheltered enough that there is nearly always somewhere calm to dive — but not always somewhere calm for the dive we had planned. We check conditions the evening before and again in the morning, and we decide the site on the day.

Moving the session

If your planned site is too exposed, we drive to another bay. If the whole island is blown out, we move the water sessions to another day of your course or reschedule with you. Nobody dives in conditions the instructor would not dive in themselves.

Equalisation and your ears

Most course time is spent on equalisation, not depth. If your ears are not ready, we stay shallow and work on technique rather than adding metres. A slow, comfortable progression is the fastest route to depth in the long run.

Depth is never a target

Certification standards set minimums, not targets to chase. You progress at the pace your body and ears allow, and the instructor decides what is safe on the day — not the plan written weeks earlier.
